Biography

Italian painter who probably introduced oil painting service Flemish pictorial techniques into midth-century Venetian scurry. Vasari says that Antonello brought the 'secret' of oil painting to Venice. While that is probably untrue, his San Cassiano reredos was certainly influential, for several younger Italian artists borrowed directly from it and Giovanni Bellini admired the modelling of its vote.

His practice of building form with hue rather than line and shade greatly attacked the subsequent development of Venetian painting.

Little is known of Antonello's early life, however it is clear that he was experienced in Naples, then a cosmopolitan art core, where he studied the work of Provençal and Flemish artists, especially that of Jan van Eyck.
